Telehandlers can carry an impressive load and reach areas that other types of equipment cannot. It is not difficult to see how useful they can be to people in many different industries. However, it is not always obvious which model of telehandler would best suit a particular set of needs. That is why R & M Equipment has created this buying guide. 

1. Consider the Profile Boom Design

Telehandlers can have either a high-profile or a low-profile boom. A low-profile boom offers a 360-degree view, which is good if you often find yourself on the road and surrounded by a lot of traffic. Overall, these booms are ideal for ground engagement and loader work. If, on the other hand, your focus is on picking up and placing larger cargo, a high-profile boom is better suited to tasks of that nature. 

2. Consider Your Capacity Needs

While it may be tempting to just go with the telehandler with the greatest load capacity, it is much more cost-effective to figure out how much capacity you need and not purchase a model that offers more than that. The money you save can be used to invest in attachments to make your telehandler more versatile. When considering your needs, take the long view. If your company is looking to expand rapidly in the near future, find a telehandler that will be able to keep up. If you will only occasionally need that extra capacity, purchase a more basic model and rent a higher capacity model for jobs that will require it. 

3. Consider the Availability of Parts

Remember that more spare parts are produced for the more popular brands and models. Picking a telehandler that is easy to locate parts for means saving time and money.  

4. Consider Attachment Options

While many telehandlers can be outfitted with attachments to make them better suited to tasks like construction, landscaping, agriculture, and so on, keep in mind that not all models support attachments. Even those labeled "universal loader attachments" are not universal for telehandlers. Many telehandlers are not built to handle the down and side loads of a loader attachment, and many loader attachments are not built to handle the weight and power of a telehandler.

Another important thing to note is that brands are not always compatible with each other. If you want to mix and match brands, you will need to be extremely careful and be sure that there are no compatibility issues. 

5. Consider New or Used

The last thing to consider is whether you want a new model or a used model. New telehandlers offer optimized performance and cutting-edge features to improve productivity and increase work output. On the other hand, used models are more affordable. You may be able to afford a more high-end model by buying it used. With a pre-owned telehandler, you can search through user reviews to better pinpoint which models are the best. All in all, the choice depends upon your budget and needs.
